This page discusses ways to use the FTP file transfer protocol with the
ViewStation. Note that FTP is not the ViewStation's default protocol.
When the ViewStation needs a file, such as its server code
file or a font file, it sends an FTP request to the host computer to
transfer the file. It specifies the host IP address and path to the file
based on your paths and entries in "HDSware" in Setup Mode and gives the
username and password you've specified as the required permission to
access the file.
Starting FTP
Verify that FTP
is running on your host computer. Some host systems don't start FTP.
Refer also to the host pages below.
Check your paths and
permissions
If you have a problem with loading a file, check the
file path; make sure you don't have a typing error and make sure the
file is actually where you think it is.
The second problem is
file permissions. Make sure the file is readable by the user making the
FTP process. If the user's permissions don't permit file access, FTP
won't move the file.
FTP Usernames and Passwords
You
can enter a username and password for FTP in Setup Mode on the Remote
Hosts menu. This menu lets you select the file transfer protocol for
each host computer; they may be different for different hosts. The
"Access Parameters" line offers dialog boxes for the username and
password for FTP. You can also enter the password in the configuration
file, either as plain text or as an encrypted value.
Using
FTP from Monitor Mode
You can select the FTP protocol from
Monitor Mode simply by entering "ftp", but this initiates an anonymous
FTP file transfer, which is discussed on another page (Anonymous FTP Opertion). You can also enter the FTP username and
password using Monitor Mode's "set" commands, as follows:
set HDSsetup.FXUtilities.protocol: FTP
set
HDSsetup.FXUtilities.username: username
set
HDSsetup.FXUtilities.password: password

Error Messages
FTP errors are generally self-explanatory;
consult your manual pages for their meaning. These error messages can
help you locate the source of your problems. (Press the Print-Scrn key
at the beginning of the boot process to give you more error messages.)
