ViewStation Setup Mode Operation

This page describes the operation of the ViewStation's Setup Mode.

Entering Setup Mode
Entering Setup Mode is simple. An icon labeled "Setup" appears in the lower right corner of the root window screen each time you turn on the ViewStation. Moving the mouse to the icon and clicking the mouse button brings up the Setup screen.

Setup Mode with Hidden Icon
The Setup Mode icon can be removed from the screen by using the "Hide Icon" resource in the ViewStation's configuration file, ./hds-fx/config/config.fx. This is sometimes useful for simplifying the user's screen or for reasons of security.

If you have the Setup Mode resource set to "Hide Icon", Setup Mode doesn't appear on the screen unless you hit the Setup Mode hotkey. This is a definable key sequence which you can set with the hotkey resource in the Setup client's defaultArgs table in the ./hds-fx/config/clients.config file:

hds.client.setup.defaultArgs: -xrm '*.hotkey: Shift Alt <Key>F1'

In this example the new hotkey would be Shift-Alt-F1. The default assignments of the Setup Mode hotkey are in ViewStation Special Keymappings.

Remote Setup Mode Operation
You can enter a particular ViewStation's Setup Mode from a remote device by making a rsh (remote shell) connection to that ViewStation, then starting the Setup client and specifying your device's display for Setup Mode. The command line would be:

rsh <ViewStation name> setup -display <remote_IP:0>

Note that only one Setup Mode can be active on a ViewStation, so any local Setup session will be be closed when the remote session starts. The local session will restart automatically when the remote session ends.

Setup Mode Passwords
This page discusses the Setup Mode password and other security concerns.

Setup Mode Tools
This page describes the Setup Mode icons, help screens, autostart buttons, etc. that help you configure the ViewStation.

Setup Mode Editing
This page describes Setup Mode operations with editing keys, filename syntax, etc.

ViewStation Remote Configuration
This page describes configuration of the ViewStation from a remote configuration file instead of Setup Mode. This is often the way a system administrator manages a large environment of ViewStations.

HDSware Automatic Configuration
