This page describes techniques to configure the ViewStation with a
remote configuration file.
Remote Configuration of the
ViewStation
The ViewStation's remote configuration feature is for system
environments where there are large numbers of ViewStations which need
to be configurable from a remote location, either when first installed
or updated or monitored at a later date by the system administrator.
The remote configuration feature can also be used to specify or change
things like IP addresses, RGB colormaps, fontpaths, etc. for every unit
on the system at the same time without making the changes on each
individual ViewStation.
Remote configuration allows the Setup Mode settings of any
ViewStation to be downloaded from a file located on a host computer,
designated the HDSware Host by default, when the ViewStation is turned
on. This remote configuration feature uses the BOOTP
protocol to determine the location of the configuration file, and
the TFTP protocol loads the file from the
configuration host to the ViewStation. These elements must be present
to use the remote configuration features.
Note that the ViewStation is set at the factory to use these
remote configuration feature. This means that default configuration
specifies that the IP address is determined by BOOTP, that TFTP is the
file transfer protocol, and that the server code is downloaded from a
boot file.
If you are not using remote configuration, you
must change these settings. Using the remote configuration feature is
simple for the user, since all the settings are set automatically by
the system configuration file. For the system administrator, it
requires setting up a configuration file and making sure the various
tools for downloading the configuration are in place, including the
correct BOOTP files and so on.
ViewStation
Configuration File
The ViewStation's configuration file is a
convenient way to manage the ViewStation even if your configuration
needs are not as elaborate as those described above.
