This page describes the ViewStation's Serial Number
encoding.
HDS ViewStation Serial Number
The ViewStation's serial number is composed of the date of
manufacture and the last six digits of the ViewStation's Ethernet
address.
The number is made up as follows: a
b cc dddddd where a = major revision level
(circuit board or components) b = one digit to give
the year of manufacture cc = two digits to give the
month of manufacture dddddd = the lowest six digits
of the Ethernet (hardware) address
For example, a serial number of D305c8161b would show a D
revision level, a manufacture year of 3 (for 1993), a manufacture month
of 05 (May) and the lowest six digits of the hardware address as
c8161b.
Note that the full Ethernet hardware address is 12 digits
long. The highest 6 digits are the vendor code, which is 008096 for
HDS. These two fields are combined to make the entire Ethernet address.
In this case the address would be: 008096c8161b
This Ethernet address is needed for starting the
ViewStation with BOOTP (other starting methods don't use it). If you're
using BOOTP, looking at the serial number is an easy way to get the
Ethernet address.
The Ethernet address is also included on a
small label on the backpanel and a label on the Ethernet chip on the
circuit board.
