This page gives some troubleshooting suggestions for problems during the
boot process.
Analyzing the Boot Process
There are
several methods of booting the ViewStation. If one doesn't work, try
another. Monitor Mode is always available for booting and is easy to
use.
Look at the error messages you get on the white screen
(press "Print Scrn" to get more verbose messages) and see if they point
to a particular problem.
Two Common Problems
There
are two common problems that sometimes prevent booting from Monitor
Mode:
-- Incorrect file or path entries, or
-- File transfer
problems.
These are discussed below.
Incorrect
File or Path Entries
In Monitor Mode, you specify the "hd"
directory as the location of your HDSware software. This should be a
root-based path up to the directory level /hds-fx. For instance, if the
full path to your fonts is:/usr/home/HDSware/hds-fx/fonts
The correct entry for "hd" is /usr/home/HDSware; the ViewStation
adds /hds-fx/... A common error is to add /hds-fx to the "hd" field.
Make sure your path is correctly specified.
A related path
problem is created by TFTP in Secure Mode, or anonymous FTP because both
of these protocols do a "change root" to their secure directories when
they try to load a file. This means that they pre-pend that directory
path to whatever you've entered. For instance, with TFTP Secure Mode and
its secure directory as /tftpboot, the total root-based path might be:
/tftpboot/HDSware
but your "hd" entry would
be only: /HDSware.
File Transfer Problems
If your
path is correctly specified but the file doesn't load, the problem may
be in the mechanism to load the file.
The ViewStation supports
TFTP, FTP, or NFS file transfer protocols; the default protocol is TFTP.
With HDSware version 3.2, NFS can be used for initial booting.
There are two common problems:
-- the file transfer protocol is not running, or
-- the file transfer protocol has security problems (TFTP is in
Secure Mode, or FTP has no username and password, or NFS has not mounted
the correct directory).
Check the file transfer protocol
you're using and click for further information:
