ViewStation Automatic Configuration

This page describes the ViewStation's automatic configuration feature. It shows the settings necessary to configure the ViewStation.

There are just three settings needed to configure the ViewStation:

Enter these three items in the "HDSware" menu in Setup Mode. You can also enter them directly in Monitor Mode if you are using that boot method or in the ViewStation's configuration file.

Now reboot the ViewStation. When it boots this time, it will locate the HDSware at the location you entered and load various files and information it needs, such as window manager clients, fontpaths, etc. You can tell that the configuration is correct if you see the window manager icons on the Setup Mode Main Menu (there should be 8 large icons, including MWM and OLWM).

More detailed information about these settings:
1. an IP address for the ViewStation:
Each network device must have a unique IP address to identify it to other devices. If you don't know what address to enter here, check with your system administrator for the address assigned to your ViewStation.
An IP address is four numbers separated by periods; each number must be 0 - 255. An example might be: "128.192.44.3".

2. the IP address of the host where you loaded the HDSware software
This is the IP address of the host computer where the HDSware CD-ROM or HDSware tape was loaded. If you don't know the address, check with the system administrator. This is the Monitor Mode "hh" field entry.

3. the path to the HDSware directory on that host
This is the root-based path to the HDSware (to its top-level directory, which is "hds-fx"). For example, if you loaded the tape at /usr/lib/X11/HDS/HDSware, that would be your path. Be sure not to include the hds-fx directory in your path entry. This is the Monitor Mode "hd" field entry.

This automatic configuration procedure works because of the ViewStation's Configuration file. This file uses an abbreviation "HDSware" (or "FXUtilities") for entries 2. and 3. above (Monitor Mode "hh" + "hd"). The configuration file knows the internal file structure of HDSware, so when these two fields are supplied, the ViewStation can construct a complete path.

For example, the font path appears in the configuration file as "/FXUtilities/hds-fx/fonts/100dpi"; therefore, the full path is "/host IP/host path/hds-fx/fonts/100dpi".

There is more information available about the ViewStation's Configuration File.
