Using Include Statements in a Configuration File

This page describes a useful feature of configuration file usage, the support for "include" statements in the file.

The ViewStation's configuration file can have some "include" statements attached to it. This is a convenient way to control settings and variations in a complex environment. It allows you to have one configuration file with common settings and individual configuration files with unique entries.

You can use this feature by adding an include statement at the end of a standard configuration file. Typically, the configuration file would contain settings that are unique to a particular environment. The include statement would give a file name for a secondary configuration file that contained settings common to a subnet, or a group of users. These settings would then be added to the primary configuration information. This allows you to customize some things, such as gateway computer addresses, fontpaths, and so on, that would apply to some users only. Note that the ViewStation looks for the include file in the same directory as the original configuration file (you could also specify a full file path if you wanted).

Suppose you wanted separate configurations for MWM and OLWM users. MWM users would use "config.mwm" and OLWM users would use "config.olwm". You would have three configuration files. Note that the config files on the #include lines must be in quotes.

# config.mwm
# This is the configuration file for MWM users
HDSsetup.Mwm.autostart: YES
#include "config.fx.general"

# config.olwm
# This is the configuration file for OLWM users
HDSsetup.Olwm.autostart: YES
HDSsetup.default.font.path: /FXUtilities/hds-fx/Xol
#include "config.fx.general"

# config.fx.general
# This is the configuration file with common settings
HDSsetup.FXUtilities.address: 128.91.3.1
HDSsetup.FXUtilities.directory: /usr/home/HDSware
HDSsetup.domain_server.primary: 128.91.3.1
HDSsetup.domain_server.suffix: hds.com
HDSsetup.client.config.path:/FXUtilities/hds-fx/config/clients.config

In this case, users select their window manager and its associated files by specifying one configuration file or the other, but get the common settings in either case.
