Where to Find Documentation =========================== For instructions on installing, configuring, and maintaining your MetaFrame server, see the MetaFrame Administrator's Guide. This manual is for system administrators responsible for installing, configuring, deploying, and maintaining MetaFrame servers. On the Solaris and AIX platforms, this is also available in Adobe PDF format in the /doc directory of your MetaFrame CD-ROM. The manual is also available from the product documentation library on the Citrix web site. Note: Using the Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can view and search the documentation electronically or print it for easy reference. To download the Adobe Acrobat Reader for free, please go to Adobe's Web site at http://www.adobe.com/ After installing MetaFrame, you can also view man pages for specific MetaFrame commands. Usage Notes, Restrictions, and Known Problems ============================================= Securing your UNIX System ------------------------- MetaFrame for UNIX relies on the underlying security of your UNIX server. As MetaFrame for UNIX provides explicit and anonymous users with access to your UNIX system via desktops and Published Applications (which may also provide access to other system commands), you should take steps to ensure that your system is secure before deploying MetaFrame. For example, on HP-UX, a user can change their shell and/or finger information from a login shell. Such changes will persist even after the session is terminated i.e. if a change is made to an anonymous user account, the next user of this account will pick up these changes. To prevent a user from changing their shell, restrict /etc/shells so that it contains only the desired system shell. If you need to publish applications for explicit use and applications for anonymous use that may present the user with a command shell, you can partition the applications onto separate MetaFrame servers and tune the server security so that the server with anonymous applications is more tightly controlled than the server with explicit applications. You may need to change the permissions on some command line tools (e.g. passwd and chsh) so that members of the ctxanon group cannot execute these tools. ctxcfg Changes Require a Server Restart (Solaris only) ------------------------------------------------------ On the Solaris platform, if you make configuration changes using the ctxcfg tool, the new settings are not automatically used by the server. To make sure that a configuration setting is used, you must stop and restart the MetaFrame server. This is particularly important if you are using ctxcfg to disable shadowing, as you will need to stop and restart the server for this setting to be applied. Also, if you are load balancing a group of servers and you use ctxcfg to limit the number of users who can log on to the server, as detailed in the Administrator's Guide, you will need to stop and restart the server. Non-English Keyboard Support (Solaris only) ------------------------------------------- On the Solaris platform, 'dead keys' may not work in the CDE applications: dtterm and dtpad. This is a known problem with these applications. A dead key is a key that does not produce a character when pressed; instead, it modifies the character produced by the next key press. Dead keys are often used to input accented symbols, such as the circumflex. To configure dtterm so that the deadkeys work: 1. Locate the system-wide application defaults file: /usr/dt/app-defaults/$LANG/Dtterm. You need to modify this file for each language (that is, for each value of LANG) you need to support. 2. Add the following text to this file: *sunFunctionKeys:True Alternatively, to configure dtterm so that the deadkeys work for an individual user, add this line to the user's Dtterm file. Creating Anonymous Users in NIS Domains --------------------------------------- All anonymous user accounts are created as local (non-NIS) accounts, with home directories in /usr/anon. We recommend that you do not attempt to reconfigure these accounts to be NIS accounts, or move the home directories for these users onto non-local (for example, NFS) file systems. To create user home directories on another file system, you must create a symbolic link from /usr/anon to the desired file system. When creating NIS accounts, ensure that these accounts do not re-use user-ids which have been assigned to anonymous users. NIS+ Support (HP-UX only) ------------------------- NIS+ functionality in MetaFrame for HP-UX is dependent on the current level of NIS+ support in the underlying Operating System. At the time of writing, there are a number of issues that mean that NIS+ does not work as expected on HP-UX. Therefore, this feature will not function in MetaFrame for HP-UX. HP and Citrix are working on correcting this situation. Problems Logging On (AIX only) ------------------------------ Each operating system ships with a default number of user licenses. On the AIX platform, the number of user licenses can sometimes be as low as two. Therefore, since each ICA connection consumes one user license, user licenses can be quickly exhausted. If all user licenses are exhausted, subsequent users will be unable to log on to the system. The error message 'All available operating system licenses are in use' is displayed. To prevent this problem from occurring, you need to increase the number of user licenses on your system - contact your operating system manufacturer or your hardware vendor for details about obtaining additional user licenses. Problems Locating the Master Browser ------------------------------------ You may experience problems auto-locating the ICA master browser when using an ICA Client for UNIX on a UNIX device with multiple network cards. To solve this problem, configure the client device to use only one network card, or set the client to use a particular master browser address instead of auto-locating. See the Citrix ICA Client Administrator's Guides for further details. Cursor Disappearance -------------------- If you experience problems with the text cursor disappearing during a session, try using xterm instead of dtterm. Note that if your xterm has a dark color background, you may want to change the color of the cursor so that it is easier to see. You can do this using a command such as: xterm -cr . However, if you must use dtterm and the cursor disappears, you can redisplay it as follows: 1. Launch the CDE Style Manager. 2. Click on the Screen icon. The Style Manager-Screen dialog is displayed. 3. Click OK. The cursor is now visible. Problems with the Display of Large Fonts ---------------------------------------- If a published application uses large fonts that do not display satisfactorily, you can rehash the font path to correct this: 1. Publish the application using a script file (for information on how to do this, see the MetaFrame Administrator's Guide). 2. Include the following line at the start of the script file: xset fp rehash Problems with Cut and Paste (Solaris only) ------------------------------------------ If UNIX, DOS or Macintosh client users experience problems cutting and pasting data from the client to the MetaFrame server, compression should be turned off at the client side. To turn compression off on the UNIX client: 1. Choose Entry 2. Choose Properties 3. Choose Connection 4. Set 'Use Data Compression' off To turn compression off on the Macintosh client: 1. Choose Connection Properties 2. Set 'Data Compression' off. To turn compression off on the DOS client: 1. Choose Properties from the Entry menu 2. Uncheck the 'Use data compression' field Specifying Printers for the Java Client --------------------------------------- If you want to print using the Java client, you need to create a printer. Applet mode: To create a printer, add the following lines to the html file: replacing testprinter with your required printer name. In this example, ctxprinters will list testprinter as a printer, which prints to lpt1. To specify a default printer (so that the user does not have to set the -P option with ctxlpr), add the following HTML tag: where testprinter is the user.localclientprinters param name value. Application mode: Type the following on the command line (all on one line): jicasession -address:CitrixServer -user.localclientprinters:testprinter -user.testprinter.port:lpt1: "-user.testprinter.driver:Generic / Text Only" -user.testprinter.comment:WFCDefault Documentation Errata (HP-UX only) ================================= On page 120 of the Administrator's Guide, in "Configuring an HP-UX System" the value of the npty parameter should be 2000.
