Where to Find Documentation
===========================
For a general introduction to installing, configuring, and maintaining your
Resource Manager system, see the Administrators Guide. The Administrators
Guide is available in Adobe PDF format in the /doc directory
of your Resource Manager CD-ROM.

Note: Using the Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can view and search the
documentation electronically or print it for easy reference.
To download the Adobe Acrobat Reader for free, please go to
Adobe's Web site at http://www.adobe.com.

You can also view online help for Resource Manager.

All documentation files installed with Resource Manager are
available from the following locations:

* In the DOC directory of your Resource Manager CD-ROM

* Installed into the documentation folder of your
  MetaFrame XP server. From the Start Menu, choose
  Start > Programs > Citrix > Documentation.

* On the Citrix Web site at http://www.citrix.com/support,
  select the Product Documentation tab. You can check the
  Product Documentation area of the Web site at any time for the
  latest updates to Citrix technical manuals. Any updates to this
  manual published after the release of this product will be
  posted there.

Usage Notes, Restrictions, and Known Problems
=============================================

Error message: "Failed to load plugin 'RMAnalysisSS.dll'" after installation
=============================================================================
If you are installing Resource Manager on Windows NT 4.0 Server, Terminal
Server Edition, you will see this error if your system does not include
the correct MDAC drivers.

You need to install the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.5,
AND THEN UPGRADE TO version 2.6 before you can use the Citrix Management Console
(both MetaFrame XP and Resource Manager components).

To download the MDAC drivers:
1. Go to www.microsoft.com/downloads
2. Select 'Keyword Search'
3. Search for Keyword 'MDAC' and OS 'Windows NT 4.0'
4. Among the downloads available will be MDAC 2.5 & 2.6.

To install the MDAC drivers:
1. Stop the Terminal Server Licensing service.
2. Empty the event log.
3. Install MDAC 2.5, and restart the server.
4. Install the MDAC 2.6 upgrade, and restart the server.
5. Restart the Citrix Management Console.

Managing the size of the Resource Manager local database
=========================================================
Resource Manager stores recent metric information in a
local database, specifically:
...\Citrix Resource Manager\LocalDB\RMLocalDatabase.
The database is compacted each time you restart the server, or
when you start and stop the IMA service.
However, this file may grow large, and you may want to compact
the database manually to save disk space.

If you need to reduce the size of the database:
1. In the Control Panel, navigate to the Services dialog.
2. Stop and then Start the "Independent Management Architecture"
service. This will compact the local database.

Requirements for the Farm Metric Servers
========================================
It is recommended that the Farm Metric Server (main and backup) are servers
that are lightly loaded and, preferably, MetaFrame XP Data Collectors.

By default, the first server on which you install Resource Manager becomes the
Farm Metric Server. The second server on which you install Resource Manager
becomes the Farm Metric Backup server. If these servers will experience heavy
loading or are not Data Collectors, you should specify different servers to be the
Farm Metric Servers.
See the Resource Manager online help for information about changing the Farm
Metric Server to a different machine.

Error message: The Farm Metric Server cannot be contacted
=========================================================
If you see the error message "The Farm Metric Server cannot be Contacted...",
you will need to check the status of the Farm metric server.
The Farm Metric server is a server that interprets metrics that apply
to the entire server farm (for example, application counts).
There is only one Farm Metric Server in the server farm.

To identify the Farm Metric server:
   a. On any Resource Manager server, start the Citrix Management Console.
   b. In the left pane of the Citrix Management Console, highlight Resource Manager.
   c. In the right pane, select the Farm Metric Server tab.
   The current Farm Metric Server is listed.

If you see this message:
1. First make sure that the Farm Metric Server and Backup Farm Metric Server are
operational. If either server is down, restart it.
2. If either of the machines are busy, i.e heavily loaded, the Farm Metric Server can take
some time to respond so the error indicates a TimeOut error. Wait for a few moments
or change the Farm Metric servers to a machine that has a lighter load.
See the "Requirements for Farm Metric Servers" earlier for more details.

Monitoring applications published using MetaFrame XP
====================================================
By default, Resource Manager will automatically monitor all
MetaFrame XP Published Applications. You can also monitor
applications that have not been published in MetaFrame XP,
as Resource Manager Applications.

Since applications that you publish in MetaFrame XP are monitored
automatically, you should not add these applications again as
Resource Manager Applications.

Monitoring the Application Count for Applications published using MetaFrame XP
==============================================================================
Resource Manager can monitor the appplication count for any application
that you publish in MetaFrame XP. However, you must specify the full path
to the application rather than just the application executable name
(i.e. without the full path).

If the application count for a published application is zero
when instances of the application are running, check that you have
specified the full path name in the Properties dialog for
the published application in MetaFrame XP. It is a good idea to use the
Browse button to select the executable to make sure that you are using the
correct full path.

Disk Monitoring on Windows 2000
===============================
By default, Resource Manager will monitor the LogicalDisk performance
object on Windows 2000 machines.
Some installations of Windows 2000, without Service Pack 1 installed,
do not include this object.
If you have this type of installation, there is no disk monitoring metric
included in the default list of metrics.
You can either:
1) Monitor the PhysicalDisk performance object instead. You can add
monitoring of appropriate PhysicalDisk metrics using Resource Manager.
Unfortunately, this means only the physical drive is monitored, not
each partition and % Disk Free Space is not monitored.
2) Install Service Pack 1. You can then monitor LogicalDisk.
This is usually preferable as the physical drive, partition and
% Disk Free Space can be monitored.

Looking for terms in the Help index
===================================
The management products that run with MetaFrame XP ship with
their own JavaHelp Jar files. Because of this, when you use
the console Help Index, you will see various alphabetical lists:
one for the console, one for Load Manager and others for
additional products you have installed, e.g. Resource Manager
or Installation Manager. This is a Java limitation.
When looking for terms in the index, make sure that you scroll down
to the list for the appropriate product.

SNMP alerts on Windows 2000 Server
==================================
Do not use SNMP alerts on any machine that is running Windows 2000
Server. SNMP alerts do not work with Windows 2000 Server.

Negative metric values
======================
Some values returned by the Windows Performance API and displayed by
Resource Manager may be negative. You should ignore these values.

DOS 16-bit applications on Terminal Server machines
===================================================
For Windows NT 4.0 Server, Terminal Server Edition machines, 16-bit
DOS applications running in ntvdm.exe are not listed individually
in Resource Manager reports.

IMA service crash while adding metrics to a server
==================================================
If the IMA service stops working while you are adding metrics for
monitoring on a server, it may be because you have tried to add a
metric which has a duplicate instance. This has been observed, for
example, with the Physical Disk metric when a zip drive is
installed on the machine. Where a metric with duplicate instances
 exists, Resource Manager cannot monitor either instance of that
metric.

Adding metrics with duplicate instances to a server
===================================================
When you are adding metrics to a server, you may see duplicate
instances of a particular metric in the Add Remove Metrics dialog.
This may be the case, for example, with the Physical Disk metric
when a zip drive is installed on the machine. If a metric has
duplicate instances, do not add either instance of the metric.
Resource Manager cannot monitor metrics that have duplicate
instances.
