File: Cannot Create New File in Early Versions

Last reviewed: October 26, 1994
Article ID: Q20325
Summary:

After double-clicking the Microsoft File icon, a dialog box appears that prompts to enter a name for a new file or open an existing one. Sometimes, however, in File versions 1.00, 1.01, and 1.02, the New button may be grayed even after a new name is typed in, and nothing happens when New is clicked. Thus, a new file cannot be created.

To work around this problem, click the Cancel button and choose Open New Datafile from the File menu. A new file can then be opened in the ensuing dialog box.

More Information:

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in File versions 1.00, 1.01, and 1.02. This problem was corrected in File version 1.04.
