Summary:

The error message "Error in Datafile" in Microsoft File can occur when you are opening or working on a data file if the data file crashes while accessing a specific record or range of records. That portion of the file may be corrupted and probably cannot be recovered. However, the rest of the data file is probably unaffected.

To recover most of the information, do the following steps:

  1. Make a backup of the data file using the Finder.

  2. Open File and create a new blank data file.

  3. Open the corrupted file and copy records 1 through the corrupted area and paste them into the Scrapbook.

  4. Copy the records from the end of the corrupted area to the end of the file and paste them into the Scrapbook.

  5. Open the new blank data file, select the new record and copy and paste the records from the Scrapbook into the new data file.

The records in the corrupted area must be input again.

Note: To avoid this problem, do not turn off the computer while File is running. Also, be sure to update to the current version of File to minimize the risk of this problem. To obtain the current version of File, call Microsoft End User Sales and Service at (800) 426-9400 or go to the Microsoft Web site http://www.microsoft.com/worldwide/default.htm
