WD2000: Deleting Embedded Object Causes File Size to Grow

SYMPTOMS

When you embed an object in a Microsoft Word 2000 document object that is embedded in a Microsoft Office 2000 document, and then delete the object in the Word object, the Office document increases in file size.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You create a file in a Office program.

    -and-
  • You insert a Word document as an object in the file you created.

    -and-
  • You insert an object in the Word document object.

    -and-
  • You delete the object in the Word document object

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, copy the contents of the Word object and paste the data in a new Word object. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Double-click the Word document icon.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  4. Click Close & Return to file name on the File menu (where file name is the file name of the client program).
  5. While the Word document object icon is selected, press DELETE to delete the Word document object.
  6. On the Insert menu, click Object.
  7. In the Object dialog box, click the Create From New tab and click Microsoft Word document in the Object Type list.
  8. If you want to display the object as an icon, click Display As Icon. Click OK.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  10. Repeat step 4.
  11. Save the document.
The file size decreases.
