SYMPTOMS
Changes made to the following option in the Microsoft Outlook 98
Tools menu, under
Options,
Mail Services may not take effect as expected:
When online, synchronize all folders upon exiting.
CAUSE
The
AutoSyncDisable value may be enabled in the Registry under the following key:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Options\General
RESOLUTION
One work around to this behavior is to configure this option prior to enabling the
AutoSyncDisable value in the Registry. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start Microsoft Outlook.
- In the Tools menu, click Options, then click Mail Services, set the Online Synchronization option
to the setting you want.
- Exit Microsoft Outlook.
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.
- Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
- Locate the following key in the registry:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Options\General
- On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry
value:
Value Name: AutoSyncDisable
Data Type: DWORD
Value: 1
- Quit Registry Editor.
- Start Microsoft Outlook.
Microsoft Outlook will now behave according to the setting you chose in Step 2, regardless of whether or not the option is enabled or disabled.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
