XADM: Long Delay in Returning Table Data for DL List in Admin

Last reviewed: December 17, 1998
Article ID: Q197502

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5
  • Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.0 Service Pack 2

SYMPTOMS

When you ad recipients to a distribution list from the mailbox properties, there is a long delay in the population of the distribution list (DL) dialog box.

CAUSE

This is happening because of the fix to bug X5:23118. Complexity was added to the existing restriction to prevent a state where DLs could not be modified. This restriction was expanded to restrict items that are DL and

'WRITABLE' only. This new addition to the restriction caused a major
performance bottleneck.

RESOLUTION

Exchange Server 5.0

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.0 service pack that contains this fix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information on support costs, please go to the following address on the World Wide Web:

   Component: Administrator Program

   File Name Version
   ------------------------
   Admin.exe 5.0.1461.78
   Madmsg.dll 5.0.1461.78

TITLE : Determining If Your Product Is Eligible for No-Charge
               Technical Support

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.0 Service Pack 2 and version 5.5.

MORE INFORMATION

We reversed the original Exchange Server Administrator program fix and went back to a simple restriction. Now, after coming back from the Address Book with a selection, the Exchange Server Administrator program simply takes a pass through the list of recipients and takes out items not homed in the current site. When it finds a recipient in the distribution list that does not belong to the site, the Administrator program now warns you:

This recipient can not be added to Distribution List <x> because this
is homed in site : <y>. Connect to a server in this site and edit the
Distribution List directly to make this change.

<YES> removes this DL from the selection and continues. <Yes To All> Automatically removes all subsequent DLs that match the criterion from the selection and continues. <No> takes you back in the Address Book with changes intact - to let the user modify the selection.
