INSTALLING THE SR-2 PATCH The Office 97 SR-2 patch (sr2aof97.exe) is an installer that contains the patch executable file and its associated files in a compressed format. The patch contains only the changes made to Office files in Office 97 SR-2. When you run the executable file, it finds the Office 97 files on your computer, determines which Office 97 components you currently have installed, makes the SR-2 changes to those files.

Before running the SR-2 patch, make sure the original install location (either CD-ROM or network server) is available.

The SR-2 patch cannot patch an installation of Office 97 that is configured to run from a CD-ROM. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for a replacement CD-ROM.

The Microsoft Office 97 Version Checker (sr2chk.exe) utility is not intended to be used to verify a network installation of Microsoft Office 97. It should be run on a local workstation or your personal computer to verify the Office 97 installation and to recommend the best method for upgrading to SR-2 level.

SR-2 Patch System Requirements

The SR-2 patch requires that all installed Office 97 programs already be upgraded to the SR-1 level. If any of your installed Office 97 applications are not at the SR-1 level, you can find the SR-1 patch (Sr1off97.exe) on the SR-2 patch CD or at the following Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/office/enhancements/sr1off97.asp

The SR-2 patch also requires that the following service pack be installed before installing the patch:

* For computers running Microsoft Windows NT Workstation

3.51 or Windows NT Server 3.51, install service pack 5.
* For computers running Windows NT Workstation 4.0
or Windows NT Server 4.0, install service pack 3 or
  later.

No service pack is required for computers running Microsoft Windows 95. The Setup program for the SR-2 patch will ask for the full Product ID number, which can be found in the About Product Name dialog box (Help menu) of any installed Office 97 program.

For more information about installing Windows NT service packs, connect to the following Web site:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/downloads/PNP490.asp?PR=NTS&T1=7d&FR=0 &A=T&T=B&S=F&

The SR-2 patch requires 65MB of disk space. Expanded and temporary files are placed in a Windows temporary folder and removed after the patch is complete. Only the updated Office files remain on the disk after the computer is rebooted.

Installing the SR-2 Patch

The SR-2 patch upgrades files for Office 97 that are installed locally. If you are running any Office 97 programs from one or more network servers, every server must be upgraded to SR-2 before you can install the patch on your computer. Contact your system administrator for more information.

Before installing the SR-2 patch, make sure that you have installed the required service packs for the operating system that you are running. See "SR-2 System Requirements" earlier in this file.

NOTE If you need any Office components that you do not currently have installed, install those components and then upgrade them to SR-1 before installing the SR-2 patch. For more information, see "Running Office 97 Setup After Installing the SR-2 Patch," later in this file.

>>>To install the SR-2 patch:

 1. Close any open Windows-based applications.

 2. Do one of the following:

*If you are installing the patch from the World Wide Web,
connect to the Microsoft Office 97 Service Release Web site
    (http://www.microsoft.com/office/office/enhancements/sr2off97.asp)
and then download the patch installer (sr2aof97.exe) to your hard
    disk.

*If you are installing the patch from a CD, insert the CD
    in the CD-ROM drive.

*If you are installing the patch from a Web download, at the
command prompt in the download directory, type "sr2aof97.exe"

 3. Do one of the following:

    * If you are running Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT
Workstation 4.0, click Run on the Start menu and then type
path\sr2aof97.exe with the appropriate command-line options
(see "Using Command-Line Options" later in this file),
or double-click the sr2aof97.exe file in Windows Explorer or
    Windows NT Explorer.

    * If you are running Windows NT Workstation 3.51, click
Run on the File menu in Program Manager or File Manager,
and then type path\sr2aof97.exe with the appropriate
command-line options (see "Using Command-Line Options"
later in this file), or double-click the sr2aof97.exe
    file in File Manager.

4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

5. If prompted, reboot the computer.

The patch is installed without user intervention. An end-user can install the patch, or the system administrator can automate the process by using the techniques described in Chapter 6, "Customizing Client Installations," in the Microsoft Office 97 Resource Kit. See "Sources for More Information," later in this file for information on obtaining the Office Resource Kit.

Using Command-Line Options

The Microsoft Office 97 SR-2 Patch program is an IExpress application. To run the SR-2 Patch program in Quiet and Admin modes, at the prompt, type:

sr2aof97.exe /Q /c:"sr2patch.exe /A"

When the Microsoft Office SR-2 Patch program runs in Admin mode, it will prompt you for locations of the Microsoft Office application, the Microsoft Shared Applications, and for the location of the STF and INF files (Setup files). The Setup files are typically located in the same location as the Microsoft Office applications. If you have used the Network Install Wizard (NIW) to customize the Setup files, these files are located either at the same location or in a subdirectory that was created using the NIW program.

The installer recognizes the following command-line options:

Option Description
------ -----------
/A Runs in Admin mode.

/Q Runs in quiet mode; limited user prompts
are given. At the MS-DOS prompt, type:
                       sr2off97 /q /c:"sr2patch /q"

NOTE If you are a system administrator for multiple servers, upgrade all servers to SR-2 before upgrading workstations that run applications directly from the network server. Doing so will prevent problems if users are running different Office 97 applications from different servers.

SR-2 Patch Log File

The patch executable file records a log of all of the actions it takes. The log file is named 97sr2_0.txt and is created in the Office folder in the Microsoft Office folder (default location is \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office). If the patch is run more than once, additional log files are created with the names 97sr2_1.txt, 97sr2_2.txt, and so on.

RUNNING OFFICE 97 SETUP AFTER INSTALLING THE SR-2 PATCH

If you need to run Office 97 Setup to add an Office program (Microsoft Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, or Word) or any individual component after installing the patch, then you must reinstall the patch to update the additional files.

If you need to return a computer to the original Office 97 version, use Office 97 Setup to remove Office and then reinstall it.

>>>To reinstall Office 97 after installing the SR-2 patch:

 1. Close all Windows-based applications.

 2. Do one of the following:

*In Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation 4.0, point to Settings
on the Start menu, and then click Control Panel.

*In Windows NT Workstation 3.51, double-click the Control Panel
    icon in Program Manager.

 3. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

 4. Double-click Microsoft Office 97, Standard Edition, or
Microsoft Office 97, Professional Edition, or any Office 97
    program.

This starts the Office 97 Setup program.

 5. Click Remove All.

Setup removes all Office 97 files, including SR-2
modifications, but leaves any user files created by using Office
    97 programs.

 6. Run Setup from the original Office 97 network server, CD, or
floppy disk to install Office 97. For more information, see
"Installing Office from the Network" in Chapter 4, "Installing
Microsoft Office," in the Microsoft Office 97 Resource Kit.
