SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to print to a Hewlett Packard DeskJet 692C printer from one of the Microsoft ActiMates Arthur software titles listed in the applies to section of this article, the computer may lose the connection to the printer when the HP Toolbox utility starts.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you enable bi-directional communication for the DeskJet printer.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, disable bi-directional communication using the HP DeskJet Configuration utility. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Quit all running programs.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. If you are using driver version 9.0 or 9.1, type hpfcfg05 in the Open box, and then click OK. If you are using driver version 9.2, type hpfcfg07 in the Open box, and then click OK.

To determine the version number of the printer driver you are using, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
    2. Right-click the HP DeskJet 690C Series Printer, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the Setup tab. The driver version number is displayed in the lower-right corner.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Click to clear the Print Cartridge Query and the Bi-Directional Communication check boxes, and then click OK.
  6. Click Restart Windows.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft ActiMates Arthur software titles listed in the applies to section of this article.
