XL98: LOOKUP Returns Incorrect Value When Source File Is Closed

SYMPTOMS
When you recalculate your worksheet, a formula that uses the LOOKUP()
function may return an incorrect value.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
- You are using Syntax 1 (vector form) of the LOOKUP() funtion.
-and-
- The values that you are using for the Lookup_vector and Result_vector
arguments are contained in a separate workbook.
-and-
- You are using defined names to refer to your data in the Lookup_vector
and Result_vector arguments.
-and-
- The workbook that contains the values for the Lookup_vector and
Result_vector arguments is closed.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, replace the defined names that you used for
the Lookup_vector and Result_vector arguments of the LOOKUP() function with
the appropriate cell references.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 98
Macintosh Edition.
