BUG: Opening VCX From Previous Version Gives Unknown Error

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Visual FoxPro for Windows, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

Attempting to modify a Visual Class library created in a previous version of Visual FoxPro can cause the following error to occur:

    Unknown error code - 5.

CAUSE

Visual FoxPro 6.0 adds several new properties to the Visual FoxPro base classes. The Visual Class library created in a previous version of Visual FoxPro contains a class that has a custom property with the same name as one of these new base class properties and the data type for this property cannot be determined.

RESOLUTION

Here are two ways to eliminate this problem:

  • Modify the Visual Class library in the version that it was originally created in, and remove the offending custom property.

    -or-

  • Remove the property from the class by modifying the Properties field of the .vcx file directly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. In Visual FoxPro 5.0, create a Visual Class based on the control base class.

  2. Add a custom property to the class named Tag.

  3. Set the value of this new Tag property to the following:

          This is a test.
    

  4. Modify this class in Visual FoxPro 6.0.

RESULTS: The Unknown error - 5 displays.
