The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook Windows NT client, version 8.5
  • Microsoft Outlook Windows 95 client, version 8.5
  • Microsoft Outlook Windows 98 client, version 8.5

SUMMARY

When using the Outlook Deployment Kit (ODK) to install Microsoft Outlook 8.5, administrators may want to keep the Outlook Express icon from appearing on the users' desktops.

MORE INFORMATION

The file, Ol98qfe2.exe, is a utility that can be packaged in the ODK build process and which will keep the icon for Outlook Express from being created. The file must be packaged in the ODK build. It can run silently during the Setup process. Before starting, the file must be downloaded to the computer that will be creating the ODK install packages.

NOTE: This patch does not work if Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 is installed on the computer that Outlook will be installed on.

The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Software Library:

 ~ Ol98qfe2.exe (size: 77072 bytes)

For more information about downloading files from the Microsoft Software Library, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

What the Utility Does

  • If a browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, is not installed before running the ODK Setup, the Outlook Express icon will not be created.
  • If a browser is installed before setup, and you have deleted the Outlook Express icon from the users' desktops, the icon will not appear.
  • If a browser is installed, and the Outlook Express icon is on the desktop, this utility will remove the icon.

The command line switch, /q will cause the entire installation to run silently. If the switch is not used, the utility prompts for confirmation to keep the icon from being created.

NOTE: The /q (quiet mode setup) switch will not prompt the user to shut down the computer. It will happen without warning. It is recommended that you close any open applications before starting the install process.

To Add the Utility

To add the utility to your ODK installation, follow these steps:

NOTE: These instructions are intended to help administrators who have not used the custom components feature before.

  1. Start the Outlook Deployment Wizard, and on the screen titled Specify Custom Active Setup Components, click Add. The component field will be populated with New Custom Component #1. Change the package title in the component field. For example, change the package title to "Outlook Express Icon Tool."

  2. Click Browse, and select Ol98qfe2.exe from the appropriate folder. If you want the utility to install silently, put a /q in the parameters field.

  3. On the Select Installation Options screen, in the Components Available window, you should see the custom component listed. Our example is Outlook Express Icon Tool.

  4. Click to select this entry and then click the > button, so that the component will be installed during Setup. This is the final step to install the utility automatically during an ODK installation.

Many other options for adding custom components are documented in the ODK, such as using the IExpress tool to create a custom package that contains many different components in one single package, signing the package, and so on.
