This article describes how to display HTML Help files in a tri-pane window when you use the HTML Help API.
It is possible that a .chm file will not use a tri-pane window when it is called with the HTML Help API. This can happen even if a tri-pane window appears when you double-click the file or when you view the file with HTML Help Workshop.
When you double-click the .chm file or view the .chm file from the HTML Help Workshop, you use HH.exe, which has a default tri-pane window type defined. When you use the HTML Help API in an application, there is no default window type because you are not using HH.exe.
To resolve this problem, create a default tri-pane window type in the HTML Help Workshop.
To create a default tri-pane window type in the HTML Help Workshop, perform the following steps:
1. Open your .hhp project file in HTML Help Workshop.
2. Click Add/Modify Window Definitions on the left-side toolbar.
3. If there are no Window Types already defined, the Add A New Window Type
dialog box appears. Type a Window Type name in the edit box and click OK.4. Select the Navigation Pane tab from the Window Types dialog box. Select
the Window with Navigation Pane, Topic Pane, and Button Bar check boxes. Click OK.5. Double-click the [OPTIONS] section of the project.
6. On the General tab, go to the Default Window list and select the new
Window Type that you just created in the previous steps.7. Recompile the project.
