WD97: Text Direction Changes After Save As Word 6.0/95

Last reviewed: September 16, 1998

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

If you use the Word 6.0/95 binary converter to save a document with multiple text directions in it, the text reverts to the standard direction.

NOTE: This problem occurs when you save using the Word 6.0/95 binary converter as installed with Word 97 Service Release 1, or the Office 97 SR-1 Patch that you can download from the Internet.

CAUSE

Versions of Microsoft Word earlier than Word 97 do not support multiple text directions in text boxes and tables.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, save the file using the Rich Text Format (*.rtf) or Word 97 & 6.0/95-RTF (*.doc).

MORE INFORMATION

The original Word 6.0/95 (*.doc) converter that shipped with Word 97 saves files as Rich Text Format (RTF).

RTF preserves the formatting only if you reopen the file in Word 97 or later versions. If you open the file in Word 6 or Word 95, nonstandard text directions are not displayed because these products do not support them. Also if you save the file as a Word Document (*.doc) in the earlier version of Word, the text will revert to the standard direction.
