XADM: Cannot Install Exchange Server in Clustered Environment

Last reviewed: September 25, 1998
Article ID: Q185853

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Exchange Server, version 5.5

SYMPTOMS

You may not be able to install Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 on a network where clustering is provided by products other than Microsoft Windows NT Server and Microsoft Cluster Server.

CAUSE

The Exchange Server 5.5 Setup and Performance Optimizer programs only recognize storage devices that have a resource type of "physical disk." The dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) that are included with most third-party clustering products do not identify the storage device as having a resource type of "physical disk."

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5. This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. service pack for Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5.
