SBS Fax Server Gets 8226 or 8218 Errors When Processing Fax

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server Fax Server component may encounter the following errors when sending or receiving faxes:

   Event Error 8218
   Unable to receive fax. Unspecified fatal error returned from fax device
   provider.

   Event Error 8226
   Send Failed.  An unspecified error ocurred.

These errors result in the fax not being delivered properly. This problem may not be immediately noticed because the only place these errors are posted is in the Application Event Log.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Small Business Server versions 4.0 and 4.0a. We are researching this problem and will post additional information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

In some cases, it has been found that updating the firmware on the modem to the latest revision will solve the problem. Also, obtain the latest revision of the modem driver (Modem.inf) from the manufacturer.
