SYMPTOMS

If you split a worksheet horizontally in Microsoft Excel 97, and then scroll through the worksheet using the IntelliMouse wheel, you may scroll through the inactive pane in the worksheet.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Universal Scrolling is enabled in Excel 97.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

Place the mouse pointer over the pane through which you want to scroll before you use the IntelliMouse wheel to scroll through the pane.

Method 2

Disable Universal Scrolling in Excel 97. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Mouse.
  3. On the Wheel tab, under Universal Scrolling, click Exceptions.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Browse to the location of the Excel 97 shortcut, click the icon, and then click Open.

NOTE: By default, the Excel 97 shortcut is located inside the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office folder.
  6. Click Close, and then click OK.
