ID: Q183955

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition and then attempt to insert a Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel file in Adobe PageMaker version 6.5, .doc or .xls files do not appear in the Place dialog box in PageMaker.

CAUSE

The problem occurs because Office 98 installs new PC Exchange file mappings; consequently, the Word and Excel filters in PageMaker no longer recognize valid .doc or .xls file formats.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, delete the PC Exchange Preferences file from the System:Preferences folder.

To delete this file, follow these steps:

1. Quit all running programs.

2. Double-click the System folder, and then double-click Preferences.

3. Locate the PC Exchange Preferences file and drag it to the trash.

4. On the Special menu, click Empty Trash.

5. Start PageMaker and insert the document.

STATUS

This problem occurs when you use Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition and Adobe PageMaker 6.5.
