The purpose of this article is to provide step-by-step instructions to set up the following software on one computer running Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0:

If set up in the incorrect order, some services may not start, or may fail to function properly. This article will be updated as necessary, when new versions of the software mentioned above are released.

Installation of Windows NT Server 4.0

Follow these steps to ensure that you install the necessary software in the correct order.
  1. Install Windows NT Server 4.0 Build 1381, Service Pack 0 or 1.


  2. Install all necessary Windows NT services, protocols, network adapters, and other software.


  3. Install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6. You can download this software from the following Microsoft Web site:

  4. Install Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS). You can download this software from the following Microsoft Web site:

    NOTE: It is not recommended that you install RRAS on a computer running Windows NT 4.0, Terminal Services Edition.

  5. Install Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools. You can download this software from the following Microsoft Web site:

  6. Install Windows NT Server 4.0 Option Pack. You can download this software from the following Microsoft Web site:

If you need to install additional Microsoft Software, follow the procedure below. An example of this would be the installation of the NetBEUI protocol.

  1. Set up NetBEUI from the Windows NT Server 4.0 compact disc. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click No.


  2. Reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6.


  3. Restart the computer.
