OL98: Dialing 10-digit Local Calls

MORE INFORMATION

METHOD #1

Modify the telephone number in the Outlook Contact record:

1. Open an Outlook contact.
2. In the telephone number field, insert your area code, preceded by +1, in front of the contacts telephone number. For example, if your area code is 972 and the contact's local area code is 214, the telephone number in the contact record would look as follows:

   +1(972)214 123 4567

   NOTE: The parentheses are required.
3. Dial the contact as usual.

Adding plus one and the area code in parentheses over rides the dialing properties that show up in Dialing Properties in Modem Properties in Control Panel. This gives extended functionality to the area code rules that are in Dialing Properties. When the dialer sees the +1(area code) it ignores the settings that apply to the area code and simply dial any digits that appear after the close parentheses.

METHOD #2

Enable 10-digit Dialing for local calls by creating a new 10-digit "Dial-from" location, as follows:

1. Click the Contacts icon on the Outlook Bar.
2. On the Actions menu, point to Call Contact, and then click New Call.
3. In the New Call dialog box, click Dialing Properties.
4. In the Dialing Properties dialog box, click New in the "Where I am" area (Internet Mail Only installation type), or "I am dialing from" area (Corporate or Workgroup installation type), and then give the location a name when you are prompted (such as, 10-digit local).
5. Click OK.
6. Type the local area code in the "To access an outside line," field.

NOTE: The field only displays two digits, but all three digits of the area code will be used.
7. Leave the For Long Distance field empty, and click OK.
8. Click Close.

To place a 10-digit Local Call using this new calling location:

1. Click the Contacts icon on the Outlook Bar.
2. On the Actions menu, Point to Call Contact, and then click New Call.
3. In the New Call dialog box, click Dialing Properties.
4. Select the location you created in step 4 above from the list, and click OK.
5. Type the number you want to dial in the Number field.
6. Click Start Call.
