The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 95
  • Microsoft Windows 95 OEM Service Release versions 2, 2.1

SYMPTOMS

After you install the Windows Sockets 2.0 update for Windows 95, the Winsock Proxy 2.0 client may not function properly.

For example, if you run the Chkwsp32.exe tool located in the Winsock Proxy client folder (by default, C:\Mspclnt) by typing "chkwsp32 -f" at a command prompt, you may receive either of the following error messages:

  • CHKWSP32 ERROR: WSP client 32bit DLL is not installed
  • CHKWSP32 caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000:00000009.

CAUSE

When you install the Windows Sockets 2.0 update for Windows 95, it replaces the following files with versions that are not compatible with the Winsock Proxy 2.0 client:

Winsock Proxy 2.0 Client:

Wsock32.dll 160,528 09-15-97 1:00a
Winsock.dll 127,696 09-15-97 1:00a

Windows Sockets 2.0 Update:

Wsock32.dll 66,560 06-24-97 11:14a
Winsock.dll 42,480 06-24-97 11:14a

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the Winsock Proxy 2.0 client again after you install the Windows Sockets 2.0 update and Dial-Up Networking 1.2b.

MORE INFORMATION

You must install the Dial-Up Networking 1.2b upgrade before you install the Windows Sockets 2.0 update. You can download both from the following Microsoft Web site:
