STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Publisher uses the Jet database engine to retrieve data for a mail merge. It actually handles the data and has the ability to read and write many common database, spreadsheet, and text file formats. The Jet engine works "behind the scenes" so you do not need to interact with it directly. It ships with Microsoft Publisher and other programs.

Publisher installs the following files as part of the mail merge feature set:
File Installed Shared/Removed Location
Pubmrg98.dll Not Shared/Removed C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office
Wdbimp.dll Shared/Not Removed C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office
Dao350.dll Shared/Removed C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DAO
Dao2535.tlb Shared/Removed C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DAO
Msjet35.dll Shared/Not Removed C:\Windows\System
Msjter35.dll Shared/Not Removed C:\Windows\System
Msjint35.dll Not Shared/Not Removed C:\Windows\System
Vbajet32.dll Not Shared/Removed C:\Windows\System
Vbar332.dll Not Shared/Not Removed C:\Windows\System
Msvcrt.dll Shared/Not Removed C:\Windows\System
Msvcirt.dll Not Shared/Not Removed C:\Windows\System
Msvcp50.dll Not Shared/Not Removed C:\Windows\System
Msrepl35.dll Shared/Not Removed C:\Windows\System
Msrd2x35.dll Shared/Not Removed C:\Windows\System
Msxbse.dll Not Shared/Not Removed C:\Windows\System
Mstext35.dll Not Shared/Not Removed C:\Windows\System
Mfc42.dll Shared/Not Removed C:\Windows\System

The following files require additional registry information for mail merge feature in Publisher 98 to work.
   Dao350.dll
   Msxbse.dll
   Mstext35.dll
   Msrd2x35.dll
   Msvcp50.dll
