The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Exchange Server versions 4.0, 5.0, and 5.5

SYMPTOMS

If you are generating the offline Address Book (OAB) and insufficient disk space is available, the following error message may appear:

An error occurred while generating the offline Address Book. To view
details, see the application event log in the Windows NT Event Viewer on
   the offline Address Book server.

   Microsoft Exchange Administrator
   ID no. c1031662

The event viewer will log the following event:

   Event ID 5004
Generation of the offline Address Book is complete. Result: An error
   occurred.

CAUSE

When you generate the offline Address Book (OAB), temporary files are created. They are usually created in the system drive of the server, unless the administrator has changed the %temp% and %tmp% environment variables.

A change in the %temp% and %tmp% environment variables could cause a problem if the system drives are used for paging files only and a limited amount of disk space is allocated to the system drive.

RESOLUTION

To correct the problem, create available disk space by deleting unnecessary files or moving the %temp% and %tmp% environment variables to another drive location, in Control Panel, System icon, Environment tab. Then you can regenerate the offline Address Book.
