SYMPTOMS

When password caching is disabled, the Password tool in Control Panel still displays the option to change the Windows password. Using this option may result in the error messages described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

137826 Disabling Password Caching and Changing Passwords

CAUSE

If password caching is disabled, technically there is no Windows password. Attempting to change the Windows password or synchronize it with other passwords while password caching is disabled may result in error messages.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

This problem no longer occurs in Windows 98. To resolve this problem, install the current version of Windows. For information about the current version of Windows, visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows.
