OFF97: Error Message: "Your Installation of Office Cannot Be Updated"

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to run the Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1)
Patch, you may receive the following error message:
The Patch has determined that your installation of Office cannot be
updated at this time. Shutdown all running applications and re-run the
patch, if the problem persists please consult the Microsoft Knowledge
Base at http://www.microsoft.com/kb.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if you install a program that updates the following
Office support files
and then attempt to run the original SR-1 Patch.
For example, the problem occurs if you have installed one of the versions
of Microsoft Outlook that is listed at the beginning of this article. The
newer versions of these files cannot be updated by the original SR-1
Patch.
RESOLUTION
To correct this problem, download and run the updated Microsoft Office 97
SR-1 Patch.

Once you have downloaded the Patch, run it by double-clicking
Sr1off97.exe. The Patch should work correctly even if you have installed
either of the versions of Microsoft Outlook listed above.
