Error 733 When Connecting to PPTP Server

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0

SUMMARY

When you use Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) to connect two Windows NT 4.0 server computers, you may receive the following error:

TCP/IP control protocol reported error 733. The PPP control protocol
for the network protocol is not available on the server. The server
supports PPP but does not support the client's network protocol.

CAUSE

This can be caused by not having an IP address specified for the Virtual Private Network (VPN) on the server.

MORE INFORMATION

The client and server are both configured for a VPN using the PPTP protocol. Each VPN must have an IP address in order for the two servers to communicate. If the Remote Access Server (RAS) configuration on the server computer does not have an address pool specified for its associated VPN, the above error can occur.

This behavior is by design since the PPTP server needs to have an IP address in order for it to communicate properly with the PPTP client over the associated VPN.
