GP Fault After Subscription Update in Internet Explorer 4.0

Last reviewed: July 31, 1997
Article ID: Q168027
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When a subscription update is complete, you may see the following error message:

Explorer caused a General Protection Fault in module Krnl386.exe at
   0002:00005c18

If you click OK, the same error message reoccurs.

RESOLUTION

To correct this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Create a new folder named Favorites Test on the desktop.

  2. Open the Favorites folder, and move all the icons into the Favorites Test folder.

  3. Move one of the icons back into the Favorites folder, and then run a subscription update.

  4. If the error message appears when you run the subscription update, delete the last icon you put into the Favorites folder. Then, create a new Favorites icon to replace the deleted icon.

  5. If the error message does not appear, repeat steps 3-5 with another icon. Continue this process until the error message appears, deleting any icons that cause the error message to appear, and creating new icons to replace the deleted icons.

After you have tested all of the icons, the error message should not reoccur.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 1. This problem does not occur with Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 2. To obtain Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 2, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
