SYMPTOMSWhile you are being prompted to accept a signed ActiveX control, two .tmp files may appear on the desktop.
CAUSEThe folder pointed to by the TEMP environment variable is not valid.
RESOLUTIONTo determine what the TEMP environment variable is set to, type "set" (without quotation marks) at a command prompt. Check the "TEMP=<path>" line, where <path> is the current setting. To modify the TEMP environment variable, open the Autoexec.bat file with a text editor, and look for the "SET TEMP" line. If the line does not exist, the proper syntax is
SET TEMP=<path>where <path> is a valid folder.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 1. This problem does not occur with Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 2. To obtain Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 2, isit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/ie/ie40/ MORE INFORMATIONThe two .tmp files represent the dialog box on the screen and an .htm file with the "HTTP 404" error message if the control is not present.
