Outlook Express Shortcuts Remain on Start Menu after Uninstall

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Outlook Express version 4.0 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you uninstall Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 for Windows 95, shortcuts for Microsoft Outlook Express Mail and News and the Internet Connection Wizard are not removed from the Start menu and the files associated with the Internet Connection Wizard are not removed from your hard disk.

CAUSE

The uninstall program for Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 does not remove these shortcuts and files.

RESOLUTION

To remove the shortcuts from the Start menu, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar.

  2. Click the Start Menu Programs tab, and then click Remove.

  3. Click the shortcut you want to remove, and then click Remove.

  4. Repeat step 3 for other shortcuts you want to remove.

  5. Click Close, and then click OK.

To remove the files associated with the Internet Connection Wizard, delete the following files from your hard disk:
  • Inetcfg.dll
  • Icwdial.dll
  • Isign.dll
  • Icwphbk.dll

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 1. This problem does not occur with Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 2. To obtain Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 2, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
