The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook Express version 4.0 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you use the TAB key in Microsoft Outlook Express, the insertion point cycles between the different fields or panes, but does not place a tab inside the actual message field.

CAUSE

The TAB functionality is not part of the HTML 3.2 specification, and therefore is not implemented in Outlook Express.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 1. This problem does not occur with Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 2. To obtain Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 2, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

   http://www.microsoft.com/ie/ie40/

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior also occurs when you are composing a Plain Text message. This occurs because of the HTML editing engine that is used for composing all messages, regardless of format.
