The information in this article applies to:

• Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02, 4.0 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

Double-clicking the desktop icon for Internet Explorer may generate the following error message:

   Windows cannot find Program.exe

   This program is needed for opening files of type
   'The Internet'.

CAUSE

The Iexplore.exe file is missing or no longer in its original location. Or, the path for the Iexplore.exe file has been renamed or lost one or more long file names.

RESOLUTION

Use Windows Explorer to locate the folder in which Internet Explorer was installed. By default, this is the Program Files\Microsoft Internet folder. If any folder in the path has lost its long file name, manually rename the folder to an 8.3 name (such as "Test"), then rename the folder again to its original long file name. If the Internet Explorer installation folder is empty, you should reinstall Internet Explorer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 1. This problem does not occur with Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 2. To obtain Internet Explorer 4.0 Platform Preview 2, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
