SUMMARY

This article is provided to show you how to install TCP/IP on Windows NT 3.51. You access the TCP/IP protocal from installed from the Network Control Panel.

  1. From the Main Program Group open Control Panel, then Network. You should have a network adapter or Remote Access Services installed to install TCP/IP. If not, you can add the MS Loopback adapter at this time.

    - Make sure the NT 3.51 CD is available, and click on the "Add Adapter"

icon. Scroll though the choices and select "MS Loopback Adapter". When
prompted for a frame type, accept the default one (802.3). If prompted
provide the CD drive letter and appropriate path. (If your PC is a DEC
Alpha, and the CD is drive f: provide F:\ALPHA in the Setup path
dialog box). It will then install the necessary drivers.

  2. Once this has been completed, or if you already have a network adapter installed, click "Add Software".

  3. Scroll through the list and select "TCP/IP and Related Components". When the "TCP/IP Installation Options" appears, make sure the "Enable Automatic DHCP Configuration" box is deselected. You can also select "Connectivity Utilities" and "Simple TCP/IP Services".

  4. In the Network Settings dialog box, click OK. Windows NT setup will go through a number of binding processes, and eventually prompt you for TCP/IP configuration information.

    - If your machine is connected to a network, obtain any TCP/IP

configuration information from your System Administrator (i.e. using
DHCP, what to use for a TCP/IP address etc.).

    - If you are using the MS Loopback adapter, or the PC is not connected

to a Network, deselect "Enable Automatic DHCP Configuration".

    - For the IP address, enter 10.10.10.10, then press the TAB key. The

"Subnet Mask" should be filled out for you. If not, enter 255.0.0.0.
Nothing is required for "Default Gateway".

  5. Whether you were provided with an IP address by your system administrator, or entered your own, click the "DNS" button and make sure the "Host Name" matches your "Computer Name". When the Reboot prompt appears, select the reboot option to enable the setup changes.

You have now successfully installed TCP/IP.
