The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMS
When you start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, you may
receive Service-Specific Error 4015. Other symptoms include receiving a
DS_E_COMMUNICATIONS_PROBLEM error message when you attempt to run the
Microsoft Exchange Administrator program against the server. The following
Application Log error may also be generated:
Service-Specific Error 4015 can also appear as 0xfaf.
CAUSEThis can occur when the Directory Store (Dir.edb) is corrupt or incomplete but appears to be started in Control Panel Services. RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem:
MORE INFORMATIONWhen you run Setup in recovery mode (Setup /R), an incomplete Directory Store (Dir.edb) is copied from the Exchange Server CD. This Directory will start; however, it will be unusable by the Information Store. Information that the Information Store needs is not present in this Dir.edb; therefore the Information Store will not start.
