SUMMARY

This article describes the process of how to remotely administer Microsoft Chat Server on a computer running Windows NT Workstation.

MORE INFORMATION

To remotely administer Chat Server on a computer running Windows NT Workstation, use the following steps:

  1. Install the Internet Information Server (IIS) from Windows NT Server 4.0. This will only install the administrator component.
  2. Make sure you have at least Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Service Pack 1. You can find the service pack in the Support directory of the Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS) compact disc.
  3. Run the Chat Server installation and install the IIS Manager extension.
  4. Restart the server.
  5. Run IIS and select Properties.
  6. Select "Connect to Server" to remotely administer Chat Server. Make sure your user account has an administrator privilege to access Chat Server remotely.
If the workstation is in a different domain and it is not trusted with the domain in which Chat Server is located, you need use the following command to establish an IPC$ to administer Chat Server:

net use \\<chat server>\ipc$ /u:<domain>\<user account>

Once you have established the IPC$ connection, a trusted session is established between the workstation and the server. IIS on the workstation then will allow you to connect to Chat Server.

NOTE: To avoid a security problem, you may need to delete the IPC$ connection once you are done administering.
