NetMeeting Seems to Hang During File Transfer

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft NetMeeting version 1.0 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

If you are using a modem connection for a NetMeeting conference, file transfers may seem to stop or NetMeeting may seem to stop responding (hang).

If you are sharing a program, or using Whiteboard or Chat, these programs may also slow down or stop altogether.

CAUSE

Transfers of large files (600K or larger) using a modem may cause CPU (Central Processing Unit) usage to exceed 85 percent. The file transfer, combined with the high bandwidth requirement for an active conference, decreases performance in NetMeeting.

RESOLUTION

Disable some NetMeeting functions to allow the file transfer to occur at a higher speed. Once the transfer is finished, re-enable the functions.

To disable NetMeeting functions, first follow step 1. If necessary, continue with step 2.

  1. Turn off the audio functions by clearing the check boxes on the Audio bar next to the Microphone and Speaker icons. This may allow NetMeeting to recover and continue.

  2. Stop the file transfer, stop Whiteboard, and stop sharing any programs. The conference recovery may take up to three minutes. If the conference does not recover, disconnect the conference completely and establish a new one.
