Freeze Copying or Deleting Files From NT Server

    Article ID: Q162208
    Creation Date: 15-JAN-1997
    Revision Date: 16-JAN-1997

The information in this article applies to:

    • Apple Macintosh System Software, version 7.x
    • Microsoft Windows NT Server, versions 3.51, 4.0

    SYMPTOMS

If you perform any of the following actions from your Macintosh computer to a Windows NT Server:

    • copying or deleting files
    • launching the server from an alias
    • opening a file on the server from an alias

your computer may freeze and the server may display a STOP message.

The STOP message you receive on the server will be similar to the following:

       STOP 0x0000000A (0xfe372026,0x00000002,0x00000001,0xfe372026)

The first and fourth parameters will always have the same value, but that value depends on where Sfmsrv.sys loads on the system. Your Windows NT server may instead reboot instead of displaying the STOP message.

    CAUSE

You may experience the symptoms listed above if either of the following situations exist:

    • You are running Windows NT 4.0 Server with Service Pack 2 installed.

      -or-

    • You are running Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 Server with Service Pack 5 installed.

A function in Services for the Macintosh may be paged out of memory at the time it is called during an interrupt. Since the code can't be paged back into memory during an interrupt, a fault occurs.

    STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Windows NT version listed above. A supported fix is now available, but is not fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for more information.

    MORE INFORMATION

An example situation that could cause this problem is a Windows NT Server (version and service pack levels listed above) that is hosting many Windows 95 clients and a small number of Macintosh clients. If the situation arises where the Windows 95 clients are actively using the Windows NT Server and the Macintosh clients aren't, the pageable code for Services for Macintosh could be paged to disk.
