Cannot Browse Using Internet Explorer with America Online 3.0

Last reviewed: January 15, 1997
Article ID: Q160896
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0, 3.01 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you are trying to browse the Web using Internet Explorer after connecting to America Online (AOL), you may receive the following error message:

   Microsoft Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site http://<address>
The site was not found. Make sure the address is correct, and try
   again.

CAUSE

You may be running AOL version 3.0 for Windows instead of AOL 3.0 for Windows 95.

RESOLUTION

To check the version of AOL you are running, click About AOL on the Help menu in AOL. If "AOL for Windows 95" is not listed, you are running AOL 3.0 for Windows 3.1. You should install AOL 3.0 for Windows 95.

MORE INFORMATION

AOL uses a 16-bit version of the Winsock.dll file. The 32-bit version of Internet Explorer 3.0 does not run with this Winsock.dll file. AOL 3.0 for Windows 95 also uses a 16-bit version of the Winsock.dll file, but installs an AOL adapter in Network properties that acts as a wrapper for their Winsock.dll file and allows 32-bit browsers to work.
