The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Publisher for Windows 95, version 3.0
- Microsoft Picture It!, version 1.0
--------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry.
Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if
a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring
the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key"
Help topic in Regedt32.exe.
SYMPTOMS
========
If you install Microsoft Picture It!, version 1.0 on a computer that
already has Microsoft Publisher for Windows 95, version 3.0 installed,
you receive the following message when you try to import some Tagged
Image Format File (TIFF) graphics into Publisher:
Publisher cannot convert this picture.
This is either because Publisher doesn't recognize the format of
the picture you want to add or there was an error loading a
graphic converter. Publisher has graphic converters that enable it
to recognize most picture formats. Some of these converters may
be missing. To install converters for word processors and graphics,
run Publisher Setup again.
The image files that cause this error include TIFF files created by
Microsoft Picture It!
NOTE: You may be able to import these same images into a copy of Publisher
that runs on a computer that does not have Picture It! Installed.
This problem does not occur with Microsoft Publisher 97.
CAUSE
=====
When you try to insert a TIFF image into a publication, Publisher checks
the TIFF file to see if it contains any features that might cause the TIFF
import filter file (Tiffim32.flt) to fail. If Publisher believes the TIFF
file might cause the filter to fail, it displays the error message.
The Picture It! Setup program installs an updated copy of Tiffim32.flt.
The combination of the new Tiffim32.flt and the particular type of TIFF
image that Picture It! creates causes Publisher to display the error
message.
RESOLUTION
==========
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And
Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete
Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics
in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.
If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair
Disk (ERD).
You can configure Publisher 3.0 so that it does not check TIFF images
before it tries to import them. After you do this, you can successfully
import TIFF images created in Microsoft Picture It!
This method involves modifying the registry; please read the warning
below before continuing.
1. Click Run on the Start menu and type the following at the command
line:
regedit.exe
and then click Open. This starts the Windows 95 Registry Editor.
2. Open the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Publisher\Preferences
3. Click New on the Edit menu and then click String Value. This inserts
a new value named String Value #1.
4. Change the name of String Value #1 to TIFF6. Be sure to use all
capital letters.
5. Double-click the TIFF6 value. This displays the Modify dialog box.
In the Value Data area, type 1.
6. Close the Registry Editor and restart Publisher.
