PRB: Post Frame Compositing Fails When Using the -d Option

Last reviewed: November 27, 1996
Article ID: Q159986
The information in this article applies to:
  • Softimage 3D for IRIX, versions 3.0, 3.5

SYMPTOMS

The process quits and the following error message appears:

   ERROR #106 Couldn't connect to display ERR_NOWINDOWSERVER

CAUSE

A problem occurs if you are doing post-frame compositing using the -d option of the "composite standalone."

The composite -d option opens a window and displays the result. If your AutoWindowPlacement (Desktop->Customize->Windows) is on, all windows are automatically placed without user intervention. After 200 frames are rendered, the X server panics because it has reached the limit for open windows (200 windows). Each open window is a client for the X server, and there is a maximum number of clients the X server can accept for connection.

The X server sends the following message to notify you of the problem:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Maximum number of clients reached

RESOLUTION

To correct the problem, you must remove the -d option in your post-frame script.
