SYMPTOMS
The Systems Management Server Software Audit may fail on workstations
running Windows NT if they receive the audit package from a Systems
Management Server 1.2 site. The following error will be recorded in the
Audit32.log file:
An error has occurred while trying to read the Sms.ini file.
CAUSE
This problem occurs under certain conditions when the Systems Management
Server Client Inventory service (Inv32cli.exe) does not write the
[logonhistory] section (specifically, the LastLoggedUser entry, or in the
[Local] section the NetCardID or SystemRole or SystemType required by
Audit32) in the Sms.ini file.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem: From the client that is experiencing the problem, connect to the SMS_SHR share of a Systems Management Server (SMS) logon server, change to the appropriate platform binary subfolder (for example, X86.bin), and then run the following command:

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Systems Management Server version 1.2. This problem has been corrected in the
latest U.S. service pack for Systems Management Server version 1.2. For information on obtaining the service pack, query on the
