PRB: Slow Preview Speed for Animations of Textured Objects

  • Softimage 3D for Windows NT, version 3.51

SYMPTOMS

On Softimage 3D version 3.51, the preview speed for animations of textured objects on GLZ and RealiZM (for example, models with texture acceleration) is very slow.

CAUSE

The previous texturing method, known as GL_REPEAT, was replaced with another method called GL_CLAMP. Unfortunately some graphics accelerators don't yet accelerate GL_CLAMP textures.

RESOLUTION

Softimage 3D has a switch that restores texture performance on Intergraph (texture-accelerated) displays. This switch exists in Softimage 3D 3.51 RC-1 and subsequent versions.

In the following procedure, you restore the texture performance settings for the Windows NT environment variable SI_SHADE_TEXTURE_REPEAT.

  1. From the Main group of the Program Manager, open Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the System icon.

  3. Click one of the lines of text in the 'System Environment Variables:' section of the dialog box (any one will do).

  4. In the Variable field, type SI_SHADE_TEXTURE_REPEAT.

  5. In the Value field, type 1.

  6. Click SET, and then click OK to exit.

  7. Reboot your machine to restore the Softimage 3D texture acceleration on texture-capable GLZ and RealiZM graphic displays.
