    Article ID: Q157626
    Creation Date: 15-OCT-1996
    Revision Date: 15-NOV-1996

The information in this article applies to:

    • Microsoft Windows 95
    • Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95

    SYMPTOMS

When you try to run Microsoft Plus! Setup, you may receive the following error message:

       Version.dll cannot start.
Check the file to determine the problem.

    CAUSE

This error message can occur for either of the following reasons:

    • The Ver.dll or Version.dll file in the Windows\System folder is damaged.
    • There is an incorrect value for the Ver.dll or Version.dll file in the registry.

    RESOLUTION

Extract a new copy of the Ver.dll and Version.dll files to the Windows\ System folder. To do so, follow these steps:

    1. Restart the computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press F8, and then choose Command Prompt Only from the Startup menu.
    2. If the Ver.dll or Version.dll files exist in the Windows\System folder, remove or rename the files.
    3. Extract new copies of the Ver.dll and Version.dll files from your original Windows 95 disks or CD-ROM to the Windows\System folder on your hard disk.

For information about using the Extract tool, type "extract" (without quotation marks) at the command prompt.

    4. Restart the computer normally.
    5. Run Microsoft Plus! Setup.

If you still cannot install Microsoft Plus!, reinstall Windows 95 to the folder in which it is currently installed.
