SYMPTOMS

When you transfer databases from IRIX to Windows NT, you lose images.

CAUSE

IRIX and SI/IRIX are case sensitive. Windows NT is case preserving.

This presents a problem when you create a database in IRIX and the names of the images you create only differ by the case. When you transfer the database to Windows NT, names that differ only by case collide in the Windows NT namespace. This causes one of the images to overwrite the other.

RESOLUTION

If your image names only differ by case, you must rename them before transferring your databases.

If you lost images after transferring databases, you have to manually change the names of the affected databases before attempting to transfer them again.

WORKAROUND

There are companies that provide utilities that rename image files. In some cases, the utility is available free of charge and can be downloaded from the web. From your web browser, do a search on "resequencer" or "rename" to compile a list of available utilities.
